Phidao: /* External Links */

Introduction
This wiki is powered by MediaWiki. You can see that logo on the bottom right of the screen. This is the framework that spun off from Wikipedia. It's a powerful tool that allows users to edit and create pages quickly without having to deal with HTML. As someone who works with HTML as a job, that knowing HTML doesn't mean it is the most efficient way to get content onto a web page. This MediaWiki is a fast way to get content on a web page.

Organization
One of the reason I wanted to create my own instance of MediaWiki is to decide on my own best practices for me and my team. Part of that is deciding whether I want to adapt to Wikipedia's philosophy of no external links in the main body of the wiki. That sounds like a noble goal, not one that is true for my team's wiki, one that I will strive for here. I also want to strive for no orphaned pages for whatever I write--every page can be traversed to from this page.

Native Features
These are features that come with the installation.

Discussion
Every page has a discussion section below the header. If the link is red, that means a page hasn't been started, but if there is a topic worth discussion, get it there.

Use this space if you have notes that you don't want on the page, or if there is an edit battle and you want to slow down and try to come to a consensus.

Enabled or Modified
These are extensions and features that comes pre-installed but disabled and had to be enabled. This includes Syntax Highlighting for code blocks.

Citations
Citations are enabled with the Cite extension.

If you want to add citation at the end of a note, you can use the following line:

Towards the bottom of the page, you can add a
References
section and add the following near the bottom.

<references />

This is collect all your references throughout the body of the page and present them in this section.

Credit
I have credit enabled. On the bottom left of every page, it will list the date the last time the page was edited and it will list the user who made that edit.

Configuration set is.

<syntaxhighlight lang=bash>
$wgMaxCredits = 1;
</syntaxhighlight>

Upload
I have enabled file uploading. The default limit on the file size is 2 MB. I have increased this to 10 MB to allow for uploading AI generated images as well as short video generations.

WikiEditor
WikiEditor is a fancier editor with quick preview support.

Installed or Configured
Extensions installed includes JSBreadCrumbs to get a trail of where you have been. I've also configured a Hidden Namespace so you can create pages unlisted from the search bar.
You write something, you forget it, and you don't know it existance until you look for it again. Simplenote is a great example for this because it does not have a tree structure organization--it's flat. If you're not familiar with NotebookLM, it's an AI notebook. It has some basic knowledge but most of the AI is logic. It doesn't access the entire public internet like Gemini or all of X like Grok. This means NotebookLM is an infant…, but one that you can train and control its knowledge base.

What can you feed it?
Web page, PDF, YouTube link, plain text, Google Drive document. For a web page, this can mean most articles on the web. When you can't, an alternative is to turn the web page into a PDF. A PDF good practice in any case. It provides a snapshot that you can backup and import into feature notebooks. A YouTube link is a powerful option because it takes the entire transcript as a resource. However, the most powerful resource is a Google Drive document. NotebookLM is a Google product and is well integrated with the Google Workspace. The benefit of using something like a Google Doc in a notebook is that you can click a button to trigger the resync process. For other resources, you can either live with multiple versions or go through the manual process of replacing a resource.

What does it do with it?
Off the bat, it can give you an AI summary of all the resources in your notebook. I typically make a temporary single resource notebook for articles and YouTube videos that I want to query direct questions on. If you need a way to clear your reading list or YouTube queue, this is it. You can get a summary and move on. It can condense 500,000 words down to a paragraph. If you want to read the original source after that, you can do so; NotebookLM provides a direct link back to the original source. If you have multiple resources, you can also have it cross-reference data and generate reports. It does well at understanding relationships and you can also use natural language to explain relationships that you think might be hard to intuit. There's also the option to turn the notebook into a podcast if you would rather listen instead of read.

Limitations
Each resource can contain 500,000 words. You can have 50 notebooks on the free tier, and 300 notebooks if you're subscribed to Gemini Advanced.

Ghost
AI chat clients are pretty good at giving you direct answers. However, it pulls from the larger internet, many thoughts and opinions from different biases; you don't always know where all the biases come from. Lately, to separate NotebookLM from Gemini, I fill a single notebook with sources from a single content creator. That way, when I make a query, I know my biases are just the opinions from one person or that person's team. I consider these notebooks a Ghost because the responses are based on what that person has said or wrote; and the notebook has the potential to live on even after the person stops creating content.

Been reading about copyrights and rights to privacy and have decided to no longer share my Ghost notebooks. But it's a real and fascinating concept if you choose to make one in private of another person or of yourself.

Gem are great when you have an idea for a repeated query. It allows me to keep a consistent response format, like if I want a deconstruction of an image organized in a certain way. When using a shared Gem, you use it with your Google profile. If you're on the free tier, you are limited to 5 requests with the "Thinking" model, this will give you the best response, most true to the instructions given for it. Otherwise, you get unlimited requests with the "Fast" model.
Use if you started watching something and decided you got the gist and wanted to just read about it.
Cheat sheet on MediaWiki Markup. Also known as wiki code.

Basic
Bold
bold

Headers
Use header 2 (
Header 2
), 3 (
Header 3
), or 4 (
Header 4
) in documents. Avoid going deeper, if you feel you need to, it could mean you should separate contents into another page.

It is recommended to skip header 1 as it matches the header of the document on top of the page.

Italic
italic

Alias
Allows you to put words on the page that is searchable by the search bar but doesn't actually appear on the page.

External Links
Example wiki code:

Reference
Example wiki code:

Sigmund Freud dissected hundreds of eels hoping to find one with a male sex organ

Sigmund Freud dissected hundreds of eels hoping to find one with a male sex organ

Note: If your page has references, the references, will automatically pool to the bottom of the page. It is recommended that you add a dedicated section for your references like so:

References
<references />

<references />

This is collect all your references throughout the body of the page and present them in this section.

Credit
I have credit enabled. On the bottom left of every page, it will list the date the last time the page was edited and it will list the user who made that edit.

Configuration set is.

<syntaxhighlight lang=bash>
$wgMaxCredits = 1;
</syntaxhighlight>

Cards can have descriptions, checklists, and a dedicated section for comments. It also has a great attachment system for a large array of document types. You can also attach other cards within Trello to create a linking system. You can also mirror two cards between two different boards to organize them in different workflows while keeping the content pointing to the same source.
Trello does special handling of links. When you paste a link onto Trello, it will automatically attempt to create a hyperlink with your link and the text from the source's title. This might not always be what you want, but in the case that you don't, you can undo the conversion, or you can also remove "http" from the front of the link to prevent it from doing the conversation.

Cautions
There are some links that doesn't auto convert well. This is because the structure of the website doesn't have titles or the titles are too long to look nice. If there is something I want to share in these categories, I'll put it on my web page instead.
Gem are great when you have an idea for a repeated query. It allows me to keep a consistent response format, like if I want a deconstruction of an image organized in a certain way. == Shared ==

When using a shared Gem, you use it with your Google profile. If you're on the free tier, you are limited to 5 requests with the "Thinking" model, this will give you the best response, most true to the instructions given for it. Otherwise, you get unlimited requests with the "Fast" model.
Loki
My Loki series of gems focuses on responding about stories. I have different kind of responses to not overload the response and to provide focus. These are for everyone. Use if you've watched a movie and love it, run it through one of these Gems to get a recap, explanation or background information on the concepts that you missed. Use if you started watching something and decided you got the gist and wanted to just read about it. Use if you don't plan on watching something, but feel the need to at least read about it.
